About Me

Name: Danny Meagher
Location: Wexford Town
Angling History: Well  it was hard to avoid it really, fishing has been in the Family for generations. All  14 of my father’s family worked at sea with various fishing and shipping companies, he himself worked on the deep-sea from the tender age of 16 , while on my mother’s side was also rooted to the sea. For those of you into Competition Angling, you may be familiar with the Larry Meyler Trophy, he was my Mothers brother and a figure my mother would tell me great stories about. Also those of you familiar with Wexford Town, Meylers fish market is another relation as well as Hayes fishing shop ( two great places for bait btw).

I started angling at a very early age and became accustomed to estuary fishing in Wexford Harbour. My first fish was landed here, on my first outing I was shown the ropes by a good friend Les Gough ( he must have the patience of a saint!!)one afternoon in Spring, two rag worm were placed on a 2 hook flapper (which was tied for me), and lobbed out of the Ferry Carriage bridge. Minutes later the rod bounced and I was into my first fish, a fine little Fluke of Flounder if you like.
A great memory and a unbelieveable BUZZ which I have yet to get used to when a fish takes your offering!

From here on in I was totally addicted everything revolved around fishing, my hurling and soccer suffered as I chased more species in Wexford Harbour, pocket-money was saved to build up my angling arsenal, nothing else even got a look in.

Then the proverbial really hit the fan a short time later one august afternoon down in the Coombe beach in South Wexford. I was ‘spinning’ for mackerel with my new Abu Beach Max beach caster with a string of feathers, Les had gone to car to grab a fag as there was no fish showing….I was reeling in and Bang I got ‘Hit’ (well I felt like I got hit because it frightened the bejesus out of me), the rod bent over and I struggled to land the fish with the undertow from the steep shingle..  I eventually landed the fish and I stood there looking at this silver yoke thinking ..thats not a mackerel !
Les must have heard my shouts as he was sprinting down the beach to where the fish lay still with the last feather ( which was red) still in its bottom lip. ‘Holy F*** thats a BASS’ was his response, I had never seen one before and was awe-struck by this shiny silver fish with its spikes flaring up as I examined it.

After that Hurling and Soccer got the P45, I was hell-bent on catching more BASS, can’t describe it, no other fish does it for me….

I went on then to competition angling for 5 years as a junior and picked up a lot along the way including a few prizes 😉 . I gave it up when I was 16 and got back to the relaxation and freedom of pleasure angling.

Today I mainly lure fish for Bass with occasional bait trips when the water is too coloured. I love lure fishing for Pollock too either by boat or shore, fantastic fish to fight on light gear .I also enjoy chasing Smooth Hounds when they arrive for their seasonal appearance. I hit a Personal Best last year on the Hound Front with a nice double figure specimen that gave me a good run for my money !

Last year I visited Skervoy In Norway to target big Cod, details of this trip can be found on the Skjervoy 2009 Tab, I will be returning again in August 2010 so stay tuned for the madness !

Early 2009 I totally switched over to light lure fishing for Bass and reached a point of no return. Being mobile & constantly on the move seeking out new Bass holding and patrol areas is a feeling bait fishing simply can not give you. Weather it be rock hopping , deep wading or stalking an ambush point its a feeling no other form of angling has given me.

Mullet are going to get my attention this year as I intend to target them for the first time and land a specimen 🙂 .

You will most likely find me on a stretch of coastline along with one or both of my fishing buddys : Barry Howlin and Pat Gahan.

If you see us out give us a shout and join us, the more people to have the Craic the better !!

Feel free to leave any comments or questions.

Talk to ye later.

Danny.

Hello Myles,

Thanks for the comment.

That’s no problem Myles, use away on the reports.
The reports will have a bit more substance as soon as the water temprature rises.

Well what can I say to that ?

We will try to keep the reports flowing as long as the weather is kind to us !
As soon as the clocks go back, the hours we put in will go through the roof 🙂 and the blog will be updated on a more regular basis.

Hi Eamonn,

The Soft Plastic is a Storm Sand Eel. My favorite lure for any salt water species around here in Wexford. Too bad they are not being produced anymore.

Sound Danny,I’ve had the Bass on the fly around Cork Harbour in August while filling in time waiting for water on the river to bring a few Salmon up.I enjoyed it and will do some more this year and hopefully bag a few Mullet to the fly.The light lure fishing looks a great craic ,I’d like to try that at some stage.Subscribed to the blog and will keep checking in.

hi danny, just getting into the spinning , bought a new rod today but don’t really know much about it ,it’s a teklon concept spin702L, could you tell me the name of a good reel to go with it?, and maybe stick a bass on it while your at it lol, thanks

Well Edytac,

Shimano do a nice range of reels in the 2500/3000 & 4000 sizes to suit all budgets. I started off with a Shimano Exage 4000 RA got it new locally for €50 about 4 years ago. A good sturdy reel that I still have as a back up, there is a good range of models to choose from the Shimano stable. The different sizes in reels will affect the balance of the rod in your hand do to there varying weights. I would suggest you call into a local tackle shop with your rod and try a few different reels on it to find out model/size best suits you. I use a Shimano Twin Power 3000 SFC on my 702L. Cracking little reel for the money. But some people I know prefer the 4000 size on the 702L, at the end of the day its a personal choice. Remember what ever ever reel you choose it must feel comfortable in the hand when set up on the rod because more than likely you will be holding it for hours on end each session, oh and try get a reel with a spare spool.

Hope that helps.
Danny.

hi there danny is the fishing in the harbour in wexford much good for pollock and bass in the summer and is there any mackerel manythanks danny gerry from newry

Hi Gerry, Wexford Harbour is good in the Summer for Bass. They are mainly fished for with bait but you can get good results on the lure too.
I have not heard of any mackerel on the coast yet, sometimes they get pushed into the Harbour in late Summer/Autumn. I remember seeing people catching them in from of the Talbot Hotel a few years ago, although this is a rare event. I have only ever caught one pollock in the Harbour, that was off the bridge while targeting Bass with Ragworm.

Here is a useful resource for conditions and tide in the Harbour:
